Replacing the washer drain pump assembly and washer drive belt solved the problem. This is a straight forward job and the only wrinkle was the new assembly does not have a flange so it bolts directly to the bottom of the washer cabinet. In my case, it meant the exit tube was now about a 1/2 inch lower than the cabinet opening. So I had to bend back the cabinet about a 1/2" inch with large pliers so the exit hose would fit. Not a big deal but added sometime, otherwise, this is would have been around a 1/2 hr job.
