I looked at the schematic and flow chart which came with this six year old Kenmore front loading washing machine. It showed that if the light was on there should be current to the switch. Therefore it appeared to be a failure of the lock. I confirmed this assessment with a question to a technician at JustAnswer.com and the technician confirmed my diagnosis. He emailed a link to Appliance Parts Pros to my door lock kit and I made the purchase. I didn't use the entire kit, just the switch and it fixed the problem. My only problem using Appliance Parts Pros was that the shipment took a week to arrive. Applicance Parts Pros did apologize and credited me for the shipping charges.
