Joseph P Severna Park , MD November 15, 2019 Appliance: General Electric Refrigerator GSS23SGSBSS Ge Refrigerator Gss23sgsbss: Ice dispenser door would not close causing ice in chute. How to replace Ice Door Assembly. Harry Homeowner, not a professional, but the consensus seemed to be that the solenoid is responsible for closing the flap after the ice is dispensed. I could close manually, but it would not close on its own. The bracket that holds the solenoid in place is completely rusted, and some of the rust made its way into the piston/cylinder and must have worn itself out. Cleaning and oiling the existing did not work. New solenoid fixed the problem but made sense to replace the springs, flap, etc since they were only a few bucks while I was in there. It seems like a stupid design to have a metal bracket holding the solenoid in place. This thing should really be plastic or different materials that won't rust.
