The prevent plate keeps the bolt from threading all the way down to the head and helps to redistribute some of the pressure throughout the connection. Bolts such as this should be checked during regular maintenance, and if found to be stripped or corroded, should be replaced with a new part. To remove the old bolt, use a wrench or socket wrench to first pull out the bolt and the switch out the prevent plate.
