This O-ring seal is used in all sorts of lawn and garden equipment as a seal for the oil dipstick. It helps seal the system from debris and dirt that could otherwise reach the oil and end up in the motor. Over time, an O-ring will start to shrink, which can result in air and oil leaks and a poorly performing engine. This replacement valve seal is a genuine OEM part for a lawn tractor or mower. The valve stem is a type of valve that transfers oil into the cylinder and then immediately reseals due to the pressure in the chamber. However, if the seal is damaged, it will not close and oil will leak into the cylinder. If this happens, the cylinder head may become overly lubricated and not run well. This seal helps prevent that from happening. It fastens to the intake valve and valve stem keeper. Seals will naturally wear out over time due to stress and exposure to corrosive oxidizing agents in an engine. When this happens, the valve will leak oil. To test if the valve seal is compromised, look for whitish-grey smoke that indicates burning oil and also measure to see how much oil the engine is consuming. If the seal is breached, use a screwdriver and socket wrench set to change out the part. This is the rocker cover gasket, which seals the cylinder head on small engines so that the engine doesn’t develop leaks. Periodically, a gasket may deteriorate with heavy use. To maintain good engine performance, the rocker cover gasket needs to be replaced with an OEM certified replacement. This type of gasket is most often found on lawn tractors. Replacing the original gasket with the new one is a simple and straightforward process. There are four bolts holding the valve cover in place. Simply remove them and the old gasket, which will likely have to be scraped to get it completely off the cylinder head. Place the new gasket exactly over the metal frame of the cylinder head—it should fit perfectly. Hold it in place with a small amount of RTV, a silicon sealer that is impermeable to oil and gasoline.
