This hex bolt is a necessary component used in a variety of small to medium sized gasoline powered engines used primarily in yard work, gardening, and landscaping. The primary use of this hex bolt is to secure the idler pulley assembly to the body of the machine. The idler pulley functions to engage the turning mechanism of the yard tool when engaged. The power yard tools that require an idler pulley which would use this screw are tillers, riding mowers, yard tractors, tillers, snow blowers and chippers. Engaging the rotating part of the yard tool places a great deal of resistance on the idler pulley, which may eventually result in it needing to be replaced. When replacing the idler pulley assembly, it's important to remember that the attaching hardware, such as the hex bolt, has also experienced a great deal of wear and should be replaced as well. This hex bolt attaches the idler pulley assembly directly to the machine housing and can be removed with a 9/16 wrench. This is a bushing made from black plastic with a cleft down the middle to provide enough flex for easy insertion. The bushing’s primary purpose is to protect wires and cables from damage as they pass through a channel. This is a flanged lock nut. It’s designed to apply tension, typically on a joint that needs to have a certain amount of flex. As such, it’s mostly used on snowblower chutes and lawnmower handles. They can remain in place, but with a forgiving connection that can take a beating. The nut size is 3/8, with a thread size of 16. A lock nut will generally last for many years. However, the silicone ring inside will wear down if it’s frequently tightened and loosened. It needs to be replaced when it will no longer reliably remain in place. Generally, this begins as a symptom of slight slippage and worsens as time goes on.
