Replaced the relay as it had slightly smoldered insulation edges. But then it turned out the fan motor (evap) had burned out, because the fan blade had shifted on the motor axis until it got blocked by a screw. Replaced evap motor and fan blade and everything works again! As the new fan blade now has a metal strip preventing unduly shift, this should never happen again (or in other words the original fan blade was of faulty design.)
