The Defrost Timer is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It serves as a crucial component in managing the defrost cycle of the refrigerator, ensuring that frost buildup is regularly melted away from the evaporator coils. This timer periodically switches the refrigerator between cooling and defrost mode, helping to maintain efficient operation and prevent overcooling or excessive ice accumulation.

Symptoms of a bad Defrost Timer include:

  • Frost building up more than usual in the freezer compartment.
  • The refrigerator or freezer sections becoming too warm due to prolonged defrost cycles.
  • The refrigerator not transitioning out of defrost mode, leading to spoiled food due to inadequate cooling.

Causes of a bad defrost timer can include mechanical wear from continuous use, electrical failures that impede the timer’s operation, or simply aging components that no longer function reliably.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Hello David, It is possible that the unit is still in defrost. Leave it plugged in for an hour. If the unit is in defrost, it will cycle out of defrost in an hours time or less.

Went through Appliance Parts Pros.com's on-line system describing my Kenmore refrigerator problem which through process of elimination stated 40% chance bottom hinges or 50% Defrost Timer. Purchased your timer which I installed. Results = some improvement but, not repaired yet. I had already measured Temps with my Infrared and also checked for leaks around double side by side doors. I double checked gaskets and cleaned them anyway. I checked levelness and cleaned dust bunnies from coils. Also checked for blockages and opened trap door all the way. (The small adjustable door opening between between the Freezer and Fridge). Still runs almost all the time? I am wondering 1). Does my Fridge have a slow freon leak? 2). Does this model have a freon filler cap to test freon pressure? 3). Would a Appliance mechanic be able to refill and use a stop leak. 4). What kind of freon is it? 5). What year was my Fridge manufactured? Will you help by answering these five questions?

Allen, The best thing to do would be to check the coils in the freezer compartment for a frost pattern. If the coils are impacted with ice then this would cause the unit to run all the time. If the coils do not have a full frost pattern then the issue would either be a restriction or a leak in the sealed system. If the coils have a nice even frost pattern from top to bottom then the sealed system would not be the issue. As for the 5 questions that you have, 1. the determination of the frost pattern is a good indicator of a refrigerant leak. 2. Unless the unit has previously been cut into, there would not be a cap to test the refrigerant pressure. 3. An appliance technician would be able to come in and refill the unit with refrigerant and would have to install a new filter drier as well. There is no type of stop leak for refrigeration systems. 4. If the unit was manufactured after 1992 then the refrigerant would be R134a prior may be R12. 5. We are unable to tell how old the unit is based off the model number of the unit. If the evaporator coils on the unit have a nice even frost pattern and the unit is getting too cold then it would be more likely that the thermostat is bad.

Hello, I recently purchased a defrost thermostat/heater assembly from your company and now the fridge side is cold as well. I have the freezer set on 1 and the food is very frozen so that's good and the fridge side is set at 5 and seems perfect. What I notice now is the ice maker at first made enough to fill the ice trough but eventually is only making enough to fill about 1/4 of it. Under continuous usage it wouldn't be able to keep up. I appreciate any advice on this matter.

Our side by side started getting warm on the refrigerator side. About 4 days later the freezer side got warm and was not freezing. I looked at your website and took the panel off. I saw that the coils were covered in frost. I defrosted the coils manually and cleaned the bottom of the unit. The refrigerator worked great for about two weeks and then the same problem happened. I ordered a defrost timer and thermostat and replaced the old ones. I again manually defrosted the coils. Worked great for about two weeks again and now the same problem happened again. I did not change the heaters out, I thought they were working because they did not have any frost on them. Is this an indication of the heaters working? Any suggestions on which part to try next or a solution?

Our side by side fridge was not cooling down, and about 3 days later the freezer part started warming up. I took off the panel and saw that the coils were frozen over so I defrosted these and cleaned the under side of the fridge. The fridge started working normally again for about 2 weeks, then the same thing happened, fridge warmed up to about 55 degrees, freezer started warming up 3 days later. I read the advice on this website and ordered a thermostat and thermostat timer. Did not order heaters because they were not iced over, now I'm wondering if that is even an indication of them working or not. I defrosted the coils manually while I changed the 2 parts. Two weeks have gone by and the fridge is having the same problem. Any advice on the problem?

Jason, With having a defrost system issue you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello JC. If the unit is not cooling good enough, it is not likely to be the timer. You need to check the condenser coils and see if they need to be cleaned out. Also, make sure the condenser fan motor WR60X187 is running good on the unit.

Alex, It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Hello Steve. The only way it would affect it was if it is in a defrost cycle. Otherwise, it does not affect it.

Bel for Model Number TPX24PBBB BB

I had water leak from water dispenser and then I ad ''FF' code with warm temp indicator so I made both Temp control to higher setting, Turn off ice maker switch and power off then did default setting to '5' then it work for couple days. Again same problem so I turn off Ice maker switch and made both Temp control from from Zero and I noticed refrigerator working. So everyday I have to make switch from zero to Five and refrigerator is working and I kept ice maker switch off. I suspect Defrost timer but I need to confirm do I need to order timer and other part too? if yes then what p/n do I need to order and if I can get video for part location would be help too. In advance thanks and I appreciate your help. Hope I hear from you soon.

1 Answer

Bel, Yes, The most likely cause for the unit not coming back on would be a defrost timer that is sticking and when you adjust the controls it give it that kick to come out of the defrost. You would want to replace the defrost timer WR9X489.
