The Defrost Timer is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It serves as a crucial component in managing the defrost cycle of the refrigerator, ensuring that frost buildup is regularly melted away from the evaporator coils. This timer periodically switches the refrigerator between cooling and defrost mode, helping to maintain efficient operation and prevent overcooling or excessive ice accumulation.

Symptoms of a bad Defrost Timer include:

  • Frost building up more than usual in the freezer compartment.
  • The refrigerator or freezer sections becoming too warm due to prolonged defrost cycles.
  • The refrigerator not transitioning out of defrost mode, leading to spoiled food due to inadequate cooling.

Causes of a bad defrost timer can include mechanical wear from continuous use, electrical failures that impede the timer’s operation, or simply aging components that no longer function reliably.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Defrost Timer (Part Number: OEM6185094)

Hello James, Unplug the refrigerator and you will need to open the fresh food door and look straight up at the control box. There will be at least two screws holding it to the ceiling of the compartment. When removed, it will lower to provide access to the adaptive defrost control. No special tools are needed.

Angelo for Model Number TFX26KRDAWW

Hey guys it's me AGAIN, I'm having trouble with the TFX26KRDAWW If I tap on the control unit (for lack of a better word) In the fridge side the thing will turn on. Now my thermo is discontinued, so I can't get another one, BUT it's just a thermo! Can't I use any fridge Thermo?? So what if it has to hang out of somewhere because it doesn't fit. Right?? Also could it be the defrost timer screwing up?? I have NO ice on the back wall. ONE more....What does that adjustment thing do on the timer? Does it just spin when timing? Thanks Guys see you on Facebook!

Angelo, In a lot of cases when you tap the control area and the unit comes back on it would be caused by a timer that is sticking coming out of defrost. One way to check this is when the unit is not running and needs to come back on, take the control cover off and turn the knob on the timer. If the unit turns on then the issue is with the timer not with the thermostat.

Stickshaker, If the compressor is running but not hot, only warm, and there is no frost pattern on the coils of the evaporator then the issue will be a sealed system problem. Could be a restriction in the filter dryer, a faulty compressor or leak in the sealed system.

Thank,You Ed

Hello Ed, When the unit is in defrost, terminal 3 to terminal 2 should read a complete circuit, (0 ohms). When in run, terminal 3 to terminal 4 will read a complete circuit. If these read good and the timer motor runs when 120Vac is applied across terminals 3 to 1, there is no problem with the timer. You should let the unit run until down to temperature and advance the timer into the defrost cycle and look a the heater. It will heat up if operating properly, (as long as the defrost thermostat is below 50°F). If this happens properly, you should check for voltage to the timer motor. The timer has to advance in order to kick into and out of defrost. The defrost timer gets its' voltage from the temperature control.

Hello Mater Tech. If there is frost, replace the board. If there is no frost, check the damper in the unit.

Tom, Yes the temp for the refrigerator on the center position should be 38 degrees plus or minus 3 degrees. We do not have specific specs on the defrost timer.

Dave R for Model Number TPS24BPDB BS

My evaporator is frosting up. Every couple of months I need to unplug the refrig and let it defrost. The timer seems to be okay. I can turn it until the fan and compressor stops. I wait about a half hour and the compressor and fan start backup. Should I be able to feel warmth on the rear of the freezer section when I turn the timer to the defrost cycle? (I do this while the freezer is still cold). I was thinking of just replacing the heater and thermostat assembly. The refrig is a GE model TPS24BPDB BS. This model does not should on you list of models. The closest model is TPS24BPDA BS. Is this model the same as the TPS24BPDB BS? I think the refrig is over 10 years old. Should I replace the timer as well? Thanks Dave

Hello Dave. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the evaporator coils in the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
