The Defrost Timer is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It serves as a crucial component in managing the defrost cycle of the refrigerator, ensuring that frost buildup is regularly melted away from the evaporator coils. This timer periodically switches the refrigerator between cooling and defrost mode, helping to maintain efficient operation and prevent overcooling or excessive ice accumulation.

Symptoms of a bad Defrost Timer include:

  • Frost building up more than usual in the freezer compartment.
  • The refrigerator or freezer sections becoming too warm due to prolonged defrost cycles.
  • The refrigerator not transitioning out of defrost mode, leading to spoiled food due to inadequate cooling.

Causes of a bad defrost timer can include mechanical wear from continuous use, electrical failures that impede the timer’s operation, or simply aging components that no longer function reliably.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Hello Cary, The common failure on this model is the defrost heater assembly WR51X442. This is located behind the freezers' back wall. The part I listed is an assembly that includes the defrost thermostat so the only part in the defrost circuit is the defrost timer WR9X489.

Ray, You have a "defrost timer" WR9X489 and you have the correct part number for the part. Once you've removed the control knobs and console, " To remove the control module and air nozzle assembly: first, remove screw(s) at the top of the module housing. Lift the housing to disengage the tabs at the bottom and the nozzle at the left side. Then disconnect the wiring harness from the rear of the module. The control module can then be disassembled from the air nozzle assembly by disengaging the control capillary at the rear and removing the screw at the front. The control module consists basically of the temperature control, the defrost control and the lamp socket. These components are mounted to a metal housing. Each component is available for replacement separately." Good Luck and Thanks

Hello Edwardo. You may need to give the timer WR9X489 a few minutes to come on, if the timer is already set in the defrost cycle. Once the timer turns to the start point, the unit should start and run properly. Hope this helps.

Hi Lue. The damper control part # WR2X8582.This part has been permanently discontinued by the manufacturer and we don't know of any source for the part. You can remove the damper and open the flap to a 50 % rating and set something in there to keep it open. This will allow more normal temperatures to prevail. The closest model # we can refer this to ends in the letters '12" instead of "14". Thank You.
