Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Shift Actuator (Part Number: OEM18111819)

1 Answer

Jimbo, If this is occurring when the unit is draining then this would be a normal type of noise but it could be that the shift actuator is making the noise if the unit is trying to go to a spin cycle but won't.

Washer will not "swish" around. haha It fills, but will not agitate. I inspected the agitator and its parts. All seem good, not broken, and working. There is noise from below like something is trying to work but it doesn't. The tub then moves slowly, but again, doesn't agitate or spin aggressively. When I do a spin and drain, it spins hard and empties with no problem. Is it the motor.... the actuator.... I don't know and don't want to buy a bunch of parts that I didn't need..... Thanks for your help! Scott

Hello Scott, this sounds like the splutch is not moving into the agitation position as the basket should not rotate in agitation mode just the agitator, you would need to unplug the washer and access the underside, remove the belt guard and check the operation of the splutch assembly W10721967, and the shifter/actuator W10913953.

Roger, If you unplug the unit and wait a couple of minutes then reapply power and try to enter diagnostics and it will not enter then you will need to replace the control board per the manufacturer. W11124710

Hello Jim, this usually occurs when the gearcase lower driveshaft drops slightly and does not allow the splutch to fully engage for spin, the gearcase would need to be replaced [W10006481].

Dave for Model Number 11025132411

Hi, I have a complete piece of crap Kenmore 110 series washer, that is not even a year old. It will not spin during a wash cycle, nor will it spin on the drain/spin cycle. I have replaced the actuator once already and that worked for two loads of wash. I then replaced the motor and capacitor and it ran fine for about a week, then it stopped spinning on the wash cycle. It runs through the wash cycle on filling, agitation, but it doesn't spin. I would then run the drain/spin cycle and that worked for a couple more wash loads and then refused to spin. I had purchased a kenmore washer a year and a half before the current one. It had the washer plate design instead of the center agitator. It did the same thing. The gearcase is very similar between the two models, with slight changes in the motor/capacitor and the electrical connectors. I can hear the actuator motor and it sounds like it is engaging, but then it sounds like it is disengaging before it spins and the water pump continues to drain. I hate this new design. Is there something else like a load sensor that is faulty or is it just a weak actuator design or could there be a problem with the wash selector control? thanks for any help. Dave

1 Answer

Hello Dave, the control board has to see the actuator change position from agitation to spin positions before it allows power to the motor, you should hear it move from one position to the other and it takes about 30 seconds or so, if the actuator is still moving after that then there is a problem in the actuator.

Hello Kevin, the shifter/actuator W10913953, is controlled by the main control board, the actuator has to move smoothly when switching between agitate and spin positions, otherwise the control board will not be able to send power to the motor correctly.

Ryan, If you were able to run a manual test then i assume you have a tech sheet in hand. First, confirm errors and test those components per the tech sheet. Yes, the actuator has the optical sensor and is most likely the issue. Make sure the capacitor for the motor is not damaged in any way.

Wayne, It is possible that the actuator is faulty but put the unit into diagnostic and see if there is any error codes stored. This will tell you what the problem may be.
