Hi, we have a maytag centennial dryer. Yesterday, it quit running, so I went and checked it out. I tested the thermal fuse, and it was bad, so I went to a local store, got the part and changed it. It ran fine. this morning, they tell me they were using the dryer, and there was a spark from the knob area. They had turned off the breaker. I switched it on, and the dryer lights came on. I put the dryer on cycle, and the motor doesn't come on, but the heat element got red-hot very quickly. I've unplugged the dryer. My question: where should I start with my testing? The thermal fuse again? Or is this the motor? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

David, With the burner going out within 4 minutes it sounds like the issue will be caused by faulty gas coils but also make sure that the venting is clear to the unit.

Kevin, If the igniter is not lighting then you would want to test to make sure that there is 120 vac getting to the igniter. If there is then the issue will be a faulty igniter. If the igniter is glowing but does not light the gas then test the flame sensor for being closed for continuity. If not closed then would need to replace the flame sensor.

B. Gonzales, The first thing that you will want to do is to check the venting of the unit from the blower wheel to the outside of the home. You can also disconnect the vent at the back of the dryer and see if it works better for a load. If it does this points to the dryer venting as the problem.

Hello Rnt, The burner has to have an air shutter. It should have come with one. You should call us at 1-877-477-7278 for a re-ship since this part is necessary to produce a proper flame.

Seems the flame from the burner is too big. Also, the flame is shutting down after just 45 seconds. I've tested the flame sensor per troubleshooting sent to me by one of your representitives and found that when covering the lense the resistance did not read high. I since have ordered and recieved a new sensor from Appliance parts pros. This new part has the identical reading as the old flame sensor (no high resistance when lense is covered). Is this in fact a problem with my burner or could I have recieved a faulty flame sensor?

1 Answer

Hello Jim, This will not be a flame sensor issue since it will read no resistance when closed or no connection when open. Once it reads open, it will have to be replaced so this will not be the issue. The problem can be with the gas valve 279923 or the burner 279536.

Hello Janelle. It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly.
