The Dishwasher Food Chopper is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It's designed to break down food particles that are washed off dishes during the cleaning cycle. This prevents large debris from clogging the dishwasher's drain and ensures that water remains clean throughout the cycle, enhancing the machine's cleaning efficiency.

A malfunctioning or worn-out food chopper can lead to several problems, such as poor cleaning results due to food particles being redeposited on dishes, or even clogs that can strain the dishwasher's pump and filters.

Symptoms of a bad Dishwasher Food Chopper include:

  • Dishes coming out with food particles still on them
  • The dishwasher making unusual noises indicating a struggle or blockage
  • Water not draining properly, suggesting a possible clog

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello John, You will need to order and replace the chopper assembly W10083957V. It was probably the cause of the problem to begin with since this is a common failure that causes the complaint you described.

Hello Jas, I would replace the chopper assembly W10083957V and start scraping the excess food from the dishes before loading. (Scrape but do not rinse).

David for Model Number DU1055XTSQ3

I have a DU1055XTSQ3 Quiet Partner I dishwasher that has worked well for several years. We began having problems with the dishes not getting clean so I took the food chopper out and it was mangled, like it had hit a screw or something. We ordered 8268383 to replace it and it installed smoothly but it seems to be too short to reach the impeller. The chopper does not turn. I can reach in and turn the impeller and there is some resistance, but the chopper turns freely. It will run fine for a couple of washers, but then the chopper becomes clogged again. Did I get the wrong part or what else could explain it? The shaft on the chopper is only about 5/8" up to the point the teeth of the impeller should be in but it looks like it needs to be at least 3/4" to get to them.

Dishes in upper rack not being cleaned. Husband trying to remove cover over the chopper assembly (the large cover below the sprayer arm), but it has a metal disk in the middle that won't come out, so can't get to the screws below it to take off the cover. he has removed all the outer screws on the cover and the one in the center of the metal disk, but the unit won't budge. This model's assembly seems to be different than any of the videos we've watched for cleaning the chopper assembly.

Stephen, It is not typical that the teeth but would most likely be caused by too much detergent and prerinsing the dishes.

Dave for Model Number Kenmore Ultra wash Quietguard deluxe

Should the chopper turn while the machine is in 'drain' mode? My dishwasher won't drain and I'm wondering if its the circulation motor after cleaning everything. The drain impeller turns while machine is in drain mode but the chopper does not turn although it will turn freely by hand. I put a phone and flashlight inside the machine to record the blade while I engaged 'drain' and the chopper did not turn. I could see the impeller was turning by looking into the pump after removing drain hose.

1 Answer

Dave, Yes the chopper assembly should be turning during the drain and if not then then chopper would need to be replaced.

For some time the dishes on the top rack were not getting clean. Then one day the machine would not work. The bottom was full of water and would not drain. I did some investigation and found the chopper blade was broken. Of course I found various particles of food and glass. I even found a rusty screw which I believe belonged to a frying pan and not the machine itself. Anyhow, I replaced the chopper blade and cleaned everything out but the machine wont start. No lights, no power, nothing. I checked the breaker and it is fine. I am at a loss as to what to do next.

1 Answer

Marvin, In most cases the white plastic that is on the chopper blade would most likely to have broken causing the blade not to work. If this is broken replace the chopper.

Hello Harold, If the chopper screen assembly is clogged, the blade cannot be intact. You will need to remove it and replace it with W10083957V.
