The Dishwasher Food Chopper is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It's designed to break down food particles that are washed off dishes during the cleaning cycle. This prevents large debris from clogging the dishwasher's drain and ensures that water remains clean throughout the cycle, enhancing the machine's cleaning efficiency.

A malfunctioning or worn-out food chopper can lead to several problems, such as poor cleaning results due to food particles being redeposited on dishes, or even clogs that can strain the dishwasher's pump and filters.

Symptoms of a bad Dishwasher Food Chopper include:

  • Dishes coming out with food particles still on them
  • The dishwasher making unusual noises indicating a struggle or blockage
  • Water not draining properly, suggesting a possible clog

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dishwasher Food Chopper (Part Number: OEM17951346)

Piper

Whirlpool quiet partner iv was making lots of noise on Last few washes, so I opened it up to check if chopper was blocked. The chopper was in pieces, with a spring and a grommet blocking the shaft of the motor. I was able to remove them. I have ordered a new chopper, but would like to know if it is advised to also open up the motor to see if any other pieces managed to make their way into that area. The pieces that I have are the screen, a rectangle washer type piece of plastic, a grommet (1 piece), a spring, a plastic shaft, and the blade. Am I missing anything? Thanks!

1 Answer

Piper, No does not sound like you are missing anything and would simply just need to replace the chopper assembly.

Hello Pat. Make sure the unit is filling properly. If not, you will need to replace the water valve W10844024. If it is filling good, you will need to check the impeller 4386996A to see if it needs to be replaced.

KitchenAid dishwasher was quitting mid-cycle. The tech from the appliance store was here twice (once to diagnose) and replaced the control board, wax motor and turbidity sensor but problem persisted. I've gotten nowhere with the appliance store and KitchenAid cust. service. I read your forum and watched your videos and then took apart my KitchenAid to find the chopper assembly broken. Just like you stated, a rubber tip from the upper rack had come off and caused the chopper shaft to shatter. The screen was caked with debris. Will broken and inoperative chopper and blocked screen cause machine to quit mid-cycle or just coincidence? I'll order parts from you because your forum and videos were instructive. Thank you for providing a genuine service! Brian

Brian, It is possible for the chopper blade to cause the unit to shut down if it is getting jammed and causing the motor to not turn. This would cause overheating of the motor and cause the unit to power down.

I had a problem with dishes not being cleaned and could hear an unusual humming but not much water flushing around. After reading on this site and others issue appeared to be the chopper blade and when I did look into it, it was covered. I ordered a brand new blade and installed. Dishes cleaned for about 5-6 cycles but then same problem and again chopper blade was covered. I cleaned it off, re-installed it and perfect - for about 5-6 cycles again and then I have to go through same steps. Why? is it likely the shaft not turning the blade? Am I not putting the blade back in correctly? When I put it back the blade turns and I can see the end of the shaft turn as well but it would appear it does not turn when the dishwasher is running. I even marked position of blades last time and after 5-6 cycles they were in same position.

Hello Brian. You will need to check and see if the impeller on the motor is bad and needs to be replaced on the unit.

Pam for Model Number Kenmore Elite Ultra Wash Dishwasher 66577979K702

These are follow-up questions to a question a few days ago about our dishwasher. Prior to that, we had replaced the inlet valve because it seemed there wasn't any water running into the dishwasher. The dishwasher does fill and drain but there is just a humming sound and no water spraying during the wash cycle. We have cleaned the filters inside the dishwasher and soaked the spray arms in vinegar to get rid of any sediment. Should we be looking at just the chopper assembly or is this more likely a motor issue? If so, is this worth repairing or should we replace the dishwasher? When we take the chopper assembly out from the bottom, how do we make sure everything seals so we don't have a leak problem? Thank you

Hello Pam, If the motor is making a humming sound, you most likely have a motor WPW10056309 issue. This would be worth the repair if there are no other issues with the unit. You should be able to test the motor using the tech sheet from behind the kick panel.

Hello Pam. You will need to disassemble the sump assembly on the unit to access and clean out the chopper assembly. It is located in the bottom of the sump.

Hello Tony. No, clean and replace any bad filters. If the issue continues, try replacing the water valve on the unit. It may not be filling enough to circulate properly.

Hello Fishslayer5, This is entirely possible. You will have to open the pump to see if anything is in the chopper blade W10083957V. While in there the chopper should be checked for damage. This is a common failure on this design since an item contacting the chopper can cause it to shatter which results in the screen becoming clogged with food particles.
