Causes of a bad agitator assembly can include wear and tear leading to wobbly or loose motions, cracks in plastic components from repeated impacts, or corrosion of metal components.

Symptoms of a bad complete agitator assembly include:

  • Vibration or shaking issues during agitation
  • Improper or lack of agitating of clothes
  • An agitator that is difficult to rotate by hand
  • Cracks, missing pieces or corrosion visible upon inspection

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Complete Agitator Assembly (Part Number: OEM9283386)

Hello Ginger, and thank you for your question. During agitation, the bottom portion of the agitator (part # WP8538246 ) will oscillate back and forth in full rotations. The upper portion, however, is designed to rotate only in the clockwise direction. This is controlled by the agitator dogs (part # 80040 ), which grip and engage during clockwise motion. When the agitator moves counterclockwise, the dogs release, allowing the upper portion to stay stationary.

Celeste, We will need to have the model number of your unit to be able to determine what may be wrong but in most cases, there will be a bolt holding the agitator in place.

Hello Kent, thank you for contacting APP, You will need to secure the Agitator/Shaft so it cannot move. Sometimes a ratchet strap wrapped around the agitator and then secured to the unit or to a 2x4 that you can hold onto to keep the shaft from moving will work. If that does not work because the agitator is spinning on the shaft the agitator will need to be broken into pieces to access the shaft and then the shaft itself secured so that the bolt can be removed, and the Agitator Assembly [WP3951744] will need to be replaced.

Henry, Once the screw that holds the top on is removed the rest should pull out...maybe try a strap slid under the agitator to pull it up and off.

Mrhousehusban for Model Number WTW8127LC

I bought my washer in 2020. I noticed the clothes, if the load size is anywhere from medium to large, in Deep Water, the clothes does not perform a top-to-bottom rotation. The clothes only move side to side, never rotating from top to bottom, rotating under the water. It's as if the agitator is not forcing the clothes to circulate. After a wash, my clothes still smell like they did when I first put them in the washer - even after adding HE Detergent, HE bleach, HE fabric softener, and rinsing twice. My Clothes Are Not Getting Clean. HELP!! Can my agitator be swapped out for a larger agitator? Will that help my clothes circulate as they should?

1 Answer

MrHouseHusban, as this model utilizes a washplate and agitator accessory, the unit is designed to only be loosely filled to 1/3 of the tub unless the agitator is in place and then it can be loosely filled to 1/2 of the tub. If this is still occurring, and no error codes appear, the main control W11510463 is likely not sending voltage to the motor properly.

Eye for Model Number LSR 7233DZ1

The base of the agitator does not spin. I have replaced the cogs, and checked all parts inside and everything looks good. But when I put the top part and the base part of the agitator together, the base is stiff. I move the top part, and it spins, but the bottom part does not move, and likewise when it is put back into the washer, the base would not move, it is very tight, like it needs a lot of grease. Do you know what could be the problem? Thank you!

1 Answer

Eye, The base of the agitator will only move when the washer is agitating. If it is not moving when agitating then the issue will be with the gearcase.

Traildad, The agitator bottom should not move by hand and if you can move it bay hand then this will be a transmission issue in which the transmission will need to be replaced.
