The Complete Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This assembly includes the central vertical agitator component along with the retainer ring. Together they are responsible for the agitation and rubbing motions that work to remove soils and stains from clothing during wash cycles.

Causes of a bad agitator assembly can include wear and tear leading to wobbly or loose motions, cracks in plastic components from repeated impacts, or corrosion of metal components.

Symptoms of a bad complete agitator assembly include:

  • Vibration or shaking issues during agitation
  • Improper or lack of agitating of clothes
  • An agitator that is difficult to rotate by hand
  • Cracks, missing pieces or corrosion visible upon inspection

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and some Kenmore models.

Sonia for Model Number CAWS953RQ0

Top agitator spins freely. Had service man come out to replace agitator dogs. The bolt holding it in had corroded and when he tried to remove it, the top broke off. He said it should have been a SS bolt. Packed up and said good luck fixing it! Paid him $50. Found your website, what a blessing. Watched one video, thought I could just pull out entire agitator, wrong washer. (Ha!!!) Looks like I will still need to get the bolt out to replace the dogs or whole agitator assemble. Any suggestions?

Sonia, you have a direct drive washer, it is a well-made washer and would be worth fixing if you wish to keep it. You will have to drill out the bolt that was broken off. Once the bolt is drilled out, you can remove the agitator. At this point, the threads in the shaft of the gearcase are probably ruined and the gearcase would need to be replaced. If you want to keep it, replace the clutch and all the parts associated with the drive system. If you can get the bolt out without ruining the gearcase shaft, you then can replace the agitator dogs and replace the bolt.

Thomas, Sometimes the agitator will get stuck like this and you will need to try to get under it with a rope or something and use leverage to pull the agitator off. Also, try tapping with a rubber mallet at the bottom to free it up.

Gerard, While agitating make sure the inner basket is able to move independent from the agitator and they are not locked together. This would indicate an issue with the actuator or splutch assembly. Both parts are in the motor area.

Hello Don, The new agitator 285565 should install using the existing fabric softener dispenser and the existing agitator bolt.

Both upper and lower agitators barely move during wash cycle. The dogs and coupler were still good but replaced them with new parts since it was already apart. Examined the inside of the lower agitator where the splined metal shaft fastens to and saw that the lower half of the plastic splines in the agitator was worn out. This caused the lower half to wobble a bit and lose traction. Also, when I reassembled everything, both agitators would initially turn but not as firm and eventually stop rotating. I checked to the splined metal shaft to see if there was any irregular sloppiness or movement which there wasn't. I'm thinking the entire assembly including the pieces in between are just worn out (17 yr machine) and decided to purchase a whole new agitator assembly to start from scratch. My question would be if replacing the entire agitator assembly will resolve the non agitating action and what type of white grease do you apply to plastic washer insert? Thanks. rudy

Ruby, try taking the entire plastic agitator assembly off and watch the metal shaft as it turns, does it turn normally back and forth? If it does not, you will need a new gearcase, if it turns good but the splines on the metal shaft are worn too much, you will still need to replace the gearcase.
