Kim, In order to replace the diode you will need to pull the unit down from installation and remove the cabinet. Once the cabinet of the unit has been removed the diode will be coming off of the capacitor. There may be a plate that would have to come off to access it on the right side but may be able to see it from the top.

Randy for Model Number MH3184XPB0

I have a Whirlpool MH3184XP microwave that does not heat. The last time I used it, I heard a loud crack (high voltage arc to ground?) a few seconds after I pressed run. All other operations (e.g. ventilation fan, control panel, turntable, underhood lights, etc.) seem to be working, just no heat. I tested the capacitor which seems OK. I understand it could be the diode. Where is this diode located? It is not in plain sight when I look behind the control panel.

Hello Randy. You most likely have a "high voltage" side malfunction. Transformer, diode, magnetron, Capacitor. You will need to be extremely careful if you decide to test the components with a multi meter, Very high residual voltage is present, so make sure you remove power to the microwave and short across the terminals on the capacitor. The magnetron should have a reading of less than 1 ohm resistance across the two terminals, and an "open" circuit between each terminal and chassis ground. The diode/rectifier should have a resistance reading in one direction only, no resistance, or resistance in both directions indicate a faulty diode. The primary winding on the transformer should read approximately 450 Ohms resistance, the secondary winding should read 80 ohms resistance, and the filament transformer should read 100 ohms resistance. All of these are +- 10%. If all the readings are proper and in range, replace the magnetron. The diode W11256462 goes from the capacitor to the frame of the unit.

Benny, If you unplug the unit and pull the unit down from installation. You will then need to pull the cabinet off the unit and discharge the capacitor. The diode is connected to the capacitor and screws to the base of the unit.

Hello John. Yes, you will need to remove the microwave from the wall to access and replace the parts. You will disconnect the power and remove the outer cover off the unit. The be careful and discharge the capacitor on the unit. Now it is safe to remove the magnetron and diode from the unit and install the new parts. Make sure you discharge the capacitor first.

Hello Don. Looking at the door, the diode is on the right side inside the unit. You must remove the outer cover to access and replace the diode.

Hello Ken, You should be able to access the diode from the front by removing the control panel. In some cases you do have to remove unit but most you do no have to.
