Hello Marie, There should be no problem with removing the felt seal as long as the filter fits snugly enough that items cannot get past the filter into the front bulkhead. If items such as baby socks are dried in the unit and they can get past the filter, the filter WP37001142 should be replaced.

Donald, Lint build up would certainly be a possible cause of this issue. You will want to open the unit and make sure that all of the inside of the unit is clear of all lint.

Deborah, You could just remove the felt liner off the filter as it is not a needed part.
