This float controls your dishwasher's water level. As the tub fills, it rises to signal the float switch to shut off incoming water, helping prevent overfilling and leaks.

  • Lifts with the water to actuate the float switch and stop filling
  • Helps protect against overfilling and door leaks
  • Replace if the float is cracked, deformed, waterlogged, or sticks in its well
  • Symptoms can include: won't fill or stops filling early; overfilling or leaks at the door
Includes: 1 float Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and shut off the water supply before servicing
  • Remove the lower rack and locate the float in the tub floor
  • Lift the old float straight up; clear any debris; seat the new float and free up-and-down movement
  • Restore power and run a fill test to proper operation and check for leaks
Troubleshooting tip: If water enters the tub even with power off, the inlet valve is likely stuck open rather than a float issue.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dishwasher Float (Water Level) (Part Number: OEM18043308)

1 Answer

Mike, Check for build-up on the stem of the float which would cause the float to not move freely and cause an over-filling issue. If this is good then the valve would be the most likely cause for this issue.

Jay, take the float out and clean it real good, there does not appear to be a o-ring there. If cleaning the stem of the float does not help, replace the float,, part number is WP99002363

Bob, Using either vinegar or a dishwasher cleaner will work for getting rid of the odor. The drain should come up to a loop at the bottom of the cabinet before going into the drain on the sink.

Dishwasher won't always fill. I know it may be the fill valve, but am wondering if it's possible or if it would help to remove the float to make sure it is clean and nothing blocking it? How do I remove the float - just pull up on it? If I remove it, will it snap back in or would I have to replace it. Is there some kind of screen over the valve where debris or build up might be partially blocking that I can clean? Is this a sensor of some kind? Seems to usually fill if I'm running the rinse cycle, but not always and doesn't regularly fill on normal or heavy cycles, but will work if I add water.

1 Answer

Pam, The float will come out just by pulling it straight up and it will snap back into place. There is not a screen that would get clogged on the water valve but as long as the float switch has continuity then most likely that is not the problem. The most likely cause with it being intermittent would be a control board issue, especially if it is happening on 2 cycles but the rest work fine.

Hello Nick. Yes, a new switch should fix the issue. As for the leak, if to much soap was used in a cycle, it will cause the issue you described.

Hello Bortledd. If you can stop the water from entering the machine by turning off the timer or unplugging the unit, you will need to look for a bad pressure hose or replace the pressure switch. If the only way to shut off the water is at the shut off for the water hoses, you will need to replace the water valve in the unit.

Water is standing in the bottom of the dishwasher at the end of the cycle. I checked the drain hose where it attaches to the disposal. I removed a little debris, and drained the dishwasher using a shop vac attached to the end of the drain hose. The water was clean (no additional debris), but after running the dishwasher again, the water still does not drain. Is there a pump, separate from the main motor that could be the problem? Thank you!

1 Answer

Hello Marlon, This style dishwasher has only one pump. When the pump spins the opposite direction, it drains. There is probably still a screen down in the pump assembly that is stopped up or a piece of plastic such as the kind used on individually wrapped cheese that is wrapped around the impeller. As long as the drain is clear, the only other thing that would cause this is a bad winding in the motor. If you pull the tech sheet from behind the kick panel it will give specific instructions on how to test the windings with a test meter.

Frank, Yes, the float WP8268895 could be stuck in an up (full) position. It could also be the flaot switch WP8268909 on the underside of the tub , but it's most likely a faulty fill valve WP8531669. You need to remove the lower access panel and kickplate and check the switch and valve wiring. If you carefully lift and lower the float from inside the tub, you should be able to hear the switch activate and deactivate, that's an even easier and faster test. .

Hello Frank. No, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the water valve WP99001359 is bad and letting in to much water. You will need to replace the water valve. Hope this helps.
