Beatrice, When you look up under the microwave you will see a screw that holds the cover in place. Remove the screw and you will have access to the cooktop light.

Greg, I cannot recommend putting a larger wattage bulb in the socket, you may try putting a LED bulb in it's place to see if the lighting is any better.
