For Whirlpool 40W Light Bulb (Part Number: OEM13537968)

Jim for Model Number MMV4205DS2

My microwave is only 3 years old and the interior(cavity) bulb has blown out...the plate cover says only use 30 watts, but it seems that the 30 watt bulb isn't being made anymore....40 watt is now listed as the new part. Is that ok to use now? Also, when I opened up the plate to expose the burnt out bulb, there was a clear glue glob stuck to the socket and bulb, and the only way to get the bulb out was to scrap off the glob...when I called the help number at your web site, I now realize this glue was a type of silicon insulator. Is it still safe with out this gob of silicon on the socket? should I glue it back to the bulb socket or just put in the bulb and place the cover plate back?

Jim, The manufacturer has discontinued the 30-watt cavity light and replaced it with the 8206232A/WPL8206232A Lamp, Cavity 40 Watt, The higher wattage bulb will operate properly in your microwave. As for the "glob" of clear glue is "normal" The manufacturer applies a dab of silicone sealer to the socket and bulb for shipping reasons(Keeps the bulb from moving around so the filaments inside the bulb don't break). Once you remove the silicone glob, it doesn't need to be replaced, just install the bulb and check it for operation.

Hello Chris, you would need to take the old bulb to a local store (Home Improvement: Lowes, Home depot etc) and have a salesperson match it to an LED type. It should be available. Without a model number to see the light circuit it most likely will work ok, if it does not light or does not turn off or respond to the keypad selections (hi/lo/off) it is possible when the old bulb failed it damaged the light circuit on the main control board.

Hello Sylba, the light bulb you have 8206232A is the correct part for your microwave. If the old light bulb shorted out when it failed it could have damaged the light control circuit in the main control board. If the light level setting keypads (high-low-off) respond or beep when you press them but the light stays on then you would need the main control board W11552018 replaced to correct the light problem.

Hello Sylba, The dimming effect is not built into the bulb. This is a feature built into the control. If it is not operating correctly you will need to replace the electronic control W11552018.

SShellfish, the bulb [8206232A] specified for your model is a 40 watt bulb. If the bulb is being operated for long periods of time or when the stove is on, then the glass is going to retain the heat built up from the bulb and oven.

Nick, if the selection will not disengage, you may want to check the ribbon of the interface [W10918929] for any signs of damage. From the basis that the selection for the hood light is not operating, either the keypad failed (unlikely if there is not an error code displayed), or the main control [W11333816] has failed and is not sensing the keypad being selected.

Mary, with the microwave unplugged, you may want to check the door switches to ensure that they are operating properly. These switches would be tested for continuity based on whether they are engaged or disengaged. Another thing to check for would be to check the control from connection P1 pin 1 to connection P4 pin 1 for continuity. If there is continuity at these connections with the unit unplugged, then you have a control board [W11182110] issue.
