The medium cam agitator repair kit is an OEM part for Whirpool washers. It includes 4 agitator dogs, a medium length cam, a cap seal, a washer for the agitator bolt, and a thrust washer.

Symptoms of a bad part:

  • The agitator not working or turning
  • Loud grinding or clicking noises during the wash cycle
  • Clothes not being thoroughly cleaned or rinsed

Causes of a faulty agitator system can include normal wear and tear over time, exposure to excessive loads or unbalanced loads, or physical damage due to impact or mishandling.

Whirlpool recommends using a small amount of grease with this kit (if no grease is present on the old thrust washer). For the Whirlpool agitator grease, order 350849. For the long cam, order 285748. For the short cam, order 285809

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Bill, first, bypassing the lid switch is not recommended as it is a safety feature. Second , based on your description of washer working thru the complete cycle after you cleaned the timer contacts but now has a motor speed problem in rinse cycle it is likely the timer has worn contacts as the motor speed in agitation and spin is controlled by the timer and this model uses a 3 speed motor ( low/medium/high) .The timer part is WP3954071.If you also need the lid switch it is 3949247V.

Marsha, The "dogs" and cam don't usually make a "thump" noise., a ratcheting or "scratching" type noise is more likely. The easiest way to check for an agitator issue with the tub empty, reach in and grasp the top of the agitator, turn the agitator in the counter clockwise direction. The agitator top should rotate and make some click noises. when you attempt to turn the agitator clockwise, the agitator top should "lock up" and not move, If you can turn the agitator in both directions then the "dogs" are faulty. The thumping noise could be the drive hub is loose on the "drive tube" and the spin basket is "rocking" and making the noise. It could also be the brake shoes on the basket drive "slipping" making the noise.

Marsha, If the agitator seems to be skipping when agitating then this would most likely be caused by the agitator dogs and would recommend replacing them.

Kenny, You would want to drill the bolt off then you could try to drill out the bolt from the shaft and if unable to get it out then would need a new gearcase.

Kenny, If you drill a hole in the top of the bolt, you can use an "easy out" tool to unscrew the bolt. Or if you drill the bolt head properly, you can remove the agitator and use a pair of pliers to remove the bolt shaft from the agitator shaft. Just be careful, not to hurt yourself, or damage the agitator or the agitator shaft.

Hello Lester, No, those are part of the lower agitator. They are not needed as the bolt secures the agitator in the unit.

Hello Angela. You will need to check and see if the agitator splines are stripped out. Also, check and see if the transmission has failed in the unit. Either of these will prevent the bottom from working.
