J., A "bypass plug" is not necessary in your model refrigerator [WRS586FLDB00]. But the water and ice cube water will not be filtered. You may want to check the water quality before you remove it.

Mary, Make sure that the filter is fully seated before turning and make sure that the cap is removed. If the filter still will not work then you will want to try a different filter and if still not working may have a defective filter head.
