The Drum Support Roller is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. It plays a critical role in supporting and stabilizing the dryer drum as it rotates, allowing clothes to tumble evenly and dry efficiently. This support roller ensures smooth, quiet operation and helps prevent unnecessary strain on the motor and other components.

Causes of a bad Drum Support Roller can include continuous wear from regular use, overloading the dryer, which puts extra strain on the rollers, and lack of maintenance, such as not cleaning the lint and debris that can accumulate on the rollers.

Symptoms of a bad Drum Support Roller include:

  • A thumping or rumbling noise during operation
  • The dryer drum not turning smoothly or at all
  • Excessive vibration of the dryer unit

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

For Whirlpool Drum Support Roller (Part Number: OEM18026328)

1 Answer

Ed, It appears that there are 2 rollers in the rear and then there will be 2 glides in the front.

Ruth, With the clothes getting balled up, check to make sure that none of the baffles are damaged. This issue sounds like either the rollers are seizing up and not turning or the motor has become weak.

Hello Ron, I'm sorry but we will need to ask you to please post a new question including the verified model number from the units' I.D. tag since the one provided will not come up for us as a valid model number for a dryer but is bringing up a refrigerator. As far as the noise goes, you will need to check the idler wheel and the front glides. These are the most common cause of this complaint besides the drum rollers. While you have the unit apart you should spin the motor by hand to ensure the sound is not coming from the motor bearings.

Eric B for Model Number ALE643RAW

This maybe 15 year old Amana dryer has slowly lost its desire to tumble, particularly with a heavy load. For while it sounded like the motor ran, but the drum did not rotate. Next time I tried it would rotate normally. More recently the motor buzzed and tripped on thermal overload. After it cooled down, and I rotated the drum, the dryer seemed to work normally. The drum seemed more difficult to rotate than it should. I followed your videos (very helpful!) and removed the drum. The belt is shot (many cracks, missing some chunks). The rollers seem worn with a little bearing play, but not really binding - even if I put load on them. The drum support pads are worn but still intact (although the drum has many flat spots where it rested on the pads). The idler pulley is not binding. The motor, however, is more difficult to turn than other motors of this size that I have worked with. I can change out the rollers and pads, but if the motor is failing I may want to look for a new dryer. Suggestions?

Eric, Check to make sure that there is nothing caught in the blower wheel which would cause the motor to not turn freely. If this checks ok then it sounds like the motor may be starting to fail.

Hello Ken. You use needle nose pliers and flex the tri ring enough to remove it from the shaft.

Mike, the drum support roller WP37001042 is approx. 3" in diameter w/ an approx. 1/2" center opening. We do not have the thickness information available. However, searching your model and BOM number I've found the correct roller for your appliance which is part number WP62649P. Thanks.

Ray, You will want to pull the drum and check the rollers as this would be the most likely cause of the noise.
