Symptoms of a bad moisture sensor include:

  • Clothes taking longer to dry or coming out still damp
  • The dryer not stopping when clothes are dry
  • The dryer shutting off prematurely
  • Inconsistent drying results

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Moisture Sensor (Part Number: OEM9282438)

Tom, You will need to test the thermostat and high limit on the heater housing. If those pass a continuity test check the resistance of the heater, it should read between 10 and 50 ohms, If all these tests pass then you will need to remove the leads from the heater and isolate to determine what side is not receiving voltage and go from there. One side only goes thru the motor and straight to the heater and the other side is from the timer and goes thru all the tstats. Don't forget to check your house power at the terminal block for 240 vac.

Guy, you will need to access the sensor by taking the back of the dryer off. You will then be able to remove the sensor and the wires that are attached to the metal sensor strips.

Hello Janet, if the unit has the "wrinkle free" option make sure it's not turned on as it sounds like that is what is going on. If you really aren't comfortable testing components it will be best to hire a professional. Hope this helps!

Hello Dorothy, The issue will most likely be the contacts in the timer or the relay on the control board is stuck in the closed position. For a proper diagnosis, we would need you to please post a new question that includes the model number from the units' I.D. tag. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Doug, the moisture sensor may need to be checked and cleaned, make sure bolt metal strips are attached to the sensor pad W10816105 there is no metal debris on the sensor bars or pad then clean the sensor bars with rubbing alcohol. The more likely problem is the electronic sensor control board WPW10476828 inside the control panel.

Hello Les, If the timer advances in the automatic cycle when the duct is removed from the machine, the issue is the ducting. You will need to install 4 inch diameter rigid ducting as short and straight as possible for proper operation to occur.

Shag Kiefer for Model Number 11064832499

I was cleaning off some gunk from the inside of the dryer drum with a dry plastic dish scubber and bumped into the moisture sensor and bright sparks flew out and the light bulb inside the dryer blew out. I replaced the light bulb and the light works fine. I can see no arc marks at the moister sensor; either on the drum side or the back (with the lint channel removed). Do you have any idea what happened? I have looked at the schematic and I cannot see any reason for the light bulb to also blow out. Is there a way to test the moister sensor and electronic control board without having to reassemble the machine first? I would like to order all needed parts together and reassemble once. Is the electronic control board available? Thank you for your help. Shag

1 Answer

Shag, a couple of things you want to check. Remove the back panel, then loosen/remove the inlet duct and check the wires and MOV(s) to the sensor bar, make sure their not damaged or shorted to the cabinet or bulkhead. We wouldn't expect you to have a power supply problem, but you may want to check that as well. There can be some residual AC voltage in the sensor circuit, but not like you described. Check the timer contacts,, make sure they all "open" when the timer is in the off position, then inspect or replace the electronic control board if all's OK.
