Hello Joyce. You do not have to remove them, but it does make it easier to install the agitator if you break those off. The instructions in the cam kit tells you this.

Hello. When you separate the 2 sections of the agitator, there are 4 tabs in the top part of the bottom. These are the tabs the instruction sheet is referring to.

Sam for Model Number WTW5200VQ2

Hello, the problem is that the clothes just wind around the agitator and makes a noise while washing. I replaced the cam agitator assembly, bolt and washer (the old dogs looked wore out) but the problem is still there. It seems to me that there is alot of play between the top part of the agitator and the bottom. There is a plastic looking washer between the two parts, but should there be something else or is there another part that is worn out? Could that plastic washer be worn? Thanks, Sam

Sam, The thrust spacer can and does wear, and will usually melt to the agitator if it is damaged or allowwed to wear excessively. As for the "play" in between the two parts, that's usually not an issue. You do want to make sure that the agitator bolt is tight, and there is little to no up and down movement in the bottom part of the agitator. grasp the clothes mover (auger) and attempt to turn it in both directions, it should "lock up" when turned in one direction and move freely in the other. If all's OK, you will need to check for proper water fill levels, and that the washer is not being overloaded.
