This spark module controls surface-burner ignition on gas ranges and cooktops. It generates the high-voltage pulses that light the flame when you turn a knob, restoring fast, reliable burner lighting and eliminating constant clicking.

  • Sends high-voltage pulses to the burner igniters when a surface knob is turned to ignite the flame
  • Coordinates sparking for multiple surface burners
  • Failure symptoms can include no spark on all burners, intermittent or weak sparking, or continuous clicking even with flames present
  • Replacing a failed module restores proper burner ignition performance
What's included: 1 spark module Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and shut off the gas supply before servicing
  • Access the module, then photograph wiring and transfer leads one at a time to the new module
  • Mount securely and ensure igniter leads are fully seated and routed away from heat and sharp edges
  • Restore power/gas and verify each burner lights promptly with a strong, consistent spark

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Spark Module (Surface Burner Ignition) (Part Number: OEM18028380)

Graham for Model Number KGST307GBL0

My ignitors spark continuously when I turn off all the burners. I I ight anyone of them the sparking stops. I disconnected each spark lead from the spark module individually the sparking continued on the others. I then disconnected all of the leads going from the burner knobs too the spark module and the sparking continued. Next I disconnected everything from the spark module except the line neutral and ground. I could still hear the module clicking inside (of course there was no sparking) I am assuming it is a faulty spark module. The problem is that I replaced it a year ago after the spark would continue for a while after the burner lit. It only seemed to fix the problem intermittently but at least it did not spark in the off position. The continuous sparking in the off position just started. Is there some other faulty part that could be damaging the spark module? I do not wish to replace the module and have it go bad again. Thanks for your help

Graham, Based on the issue, it would most likely be caused by a faulty spark module.

Chris, Check the burner base, cap and surrounding area for spillage and debris. Check that the igniter itself isn't loose or damaged. and that the burner flame is the proper size and color. Your cooktop has a "re ignition" module WP4454392 / 3185229 Spark Module. If the burner flame isn't within a close enough proximity of the igniter, the igniter reads this as no flame and attempts to re ignite the burner. If the burner assembly and igniter are OK, then replace the spark module.

Elmer, The most likely cause for the unit to have the igniters clicking continuously when in the off position would be a faulty ignition switch. You will want to check the switches and test with them in the off position for continuity. If there is continuity in the off position then the switch is bad. If they all check ok then it may be a faulty spark module.

Jim, the spark module listed for your model is part number WP4454392. As long as the manufacturer part number 4454392 matches on all sites there shouldn't be a difference in the part itself. Unfortunately, we can not determine the difference with each offered spark module cost. The spark switch is part number WP3185427, this item comes one per package. Thanks!

Hello Gary, This will be a bad start switch WB13M1 for one of the surface burners. You can test them by unplugging them one at a time until the unit stops sparking. When the bad one is dis-connected, the unit will stop sparking.

Hello Denzil, You will want to check your burner switches for continuity. Turn gas off to unit and check with valve open for continuity on the switches. If there is continuity then check the wiring to the spark module for broken or damaged wires. If this checks ok then replace the spark module.

Hello Frank. 1. Turn off gas supply and disconnect power to the range. 2. Open the oven door and remove the racks from inside the oven. 3. Pull the range out of its mounting location so that you can access the rear of the unit. 4. Remove the left side panel. To remove the spark module: a) Disconnect the wire connectors from the module terminals. b) Remove the mounting screw, slide the module out from under the tab, and remove it from the housing.

Byron, Have you checked or has anyone reccomended checks at the gas distribution valve WPW10293048 ? The solenoid coils will disrupt the voltage to the igniters if they are weak(less than 200 ohms resistance) or there is a loose connection on the wires. And your sure the power corcd is plugged into a properly polarized and grounded 120 VAC outlet, and the arae of the burner tube(s) where the igniter is located is clean. Thanks and Good Luck.
