The Whirlpool spark module is an OEM replacement part responsible for controlling the ignition and sparking of the gas burners in a Whirlpool range or cooktop. The spark module is typically located behind the control panel or near the burners, and it generates the electrical sparks needed to ignite the gas for cooking.

Causes of a bad module can include electrical surges, physical damage, or simply wear and tear over time.

This part fixes the following symptoms:

  • Gas burners fail to ignite or have weak or inconsistent sparks
  • Continuous sparking even after the burner is lit
  • No spark at all when attempting to ignite the burners
  • Unresponsive or non-functional burner control knobs
  • Visible damage, such as burn marks or corrosion, on the spark module

The Whirlpool spark module can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

This is an old glass top with 4 gas burners. The right rear burner doesn't click but can be lit with a lighter. I see where I could replace the switch (Harness with all four?), the module as well as spark igniter. I removed burners and knobs, but I don't see how the glass top is attached to the box. Does the unit need to be totally removed to replace these parts? How do I remove the glass top? This glass top is cracked already but I see you don't have it. Can it be ordered? And can the seal strip be ordered? Thanks for great service always. Joe

Joe, to remove the glass top, the entire cooktop would need to be lifted up from where it is set so that the glass top W10564558 mounting screws can be removed. The glass top is a special order item that is ordered from the manufacturer when a customer order is placed.

I purchased a replacement Module-Spk Part # W10110491 to replace the original Part # 3186493 - the part I received is different - on the bottom of the part is power connections -N a middle plug that looks like a upside down T and +L - my existing part the power connection is at the top - and I only have 2 connection a red and a yellow - Does my red wire go on the +L and my yellow wire go on the -N and do I leave the middle connection empty? Thanks

1 Answer

Mike, Per your schematic your hot wire and neutral should be black and white. If this is not the case you can do a live voltage test with extreme caution and disconnect the two wires in question and test each one individually to ground to see which line gives you 120 volts. That will go on your l side.

Great site.... Water boiled over using the right rear burner on our cooktop. Afterwards. none of the burners would spark, but we can light with matches. Outlet and circuit breaker are fine. Does this sound like its most likely the spark module? Assuming it is, do I need to totally remove the cooktop and turn it upside down to access the old spark module for replacement? Viewing it from above or from below, I don't see anything that looks like the module. Thanks!

1 Answer

Hello Hal. If you can turn on another burner and that one sparks, then replace the switch for that burner that does not spark. If it still does not spark, replace the module.

Larry, To replace the spark module on this unit you will need to pull it out from installation. You will most likely need to disconnect the gas supply when removing it from installation to take it apart.

Fixer, Unfortunately there are no videos for this but if you remove the burner caps on your unit, once burner caps are removed then you would remove the screw holding the burner head in place.
