The Spark Module Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool ranges. It is responsible for generating the spark needed to ignite the gas burners on the cooktop. The spark module sends electrical signals to the igniters, creating the spark that lights the gas for cooking.

Over time, the spark module can fail due to electrical issues, exposure to moisture, or normal wear and tear. When the spark module becomes faulty, it can lead to various problems with igniting the burners.

Symptoms of a bad spark module include:

  • Burners not lighting or taking a long time to light
  • No clicking sound when turning the burner knob
  • Burners only lighting intermittently
  • Visible sparks or arcing from the module

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

NOTE: This part is only compatible with serial numbers starting with 21 and up on model 8351VV.

Keith, the spark module is located under the glass cook top and burners and mounted to the bottom of the burner box. You will need to remove power to the cooktop, turn off the gas supply and lift the cook top out of the counter top opening. Label and remove the grates, burner caps, burner mounting screws and drip pans, and burner knobs, then lift the top off the burner box. You may also want to order new burner mounting screws 7101P286-60 3 for each burner, as they have a tendency to be rusty or seized to the burner and either strip or break in the removal procedure.

Mark, You will want to pull the burner heads off and check the ignitors for cracks. It is possible that the ignitors are bad. The spark module would be less likely but still a possibility. To check the ignitor you will look for cracks and check continuity. If there is continuity then the ignitor is good.

Hello Pete, I looked up the wiring configuration for your unit and this is not a consideration on this model. There have been models produced with what they referred to as a re-ignition module. These units would spark the burner that the flame had gone out on, so they are the ones that must be wired specifically to the burner ignitor in question. That is why some older models had different color wires for each surface burner. I apologize for any inconvenience and concern this may have caused you. The model you have can be wired in any configuration so you have nothing to worry about.

Hello Pete, You are correct that the unit has to be pulled to remove the main top and access the spark module. You can test these with no gas to the unit. Also, you should label the ignitor wires to prevent cross-wiring. Cross-wiring a gas cooktop can be extremely dangerous.
