The Spark Module Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool ranges. It is responsible for generating the spark needed to ignite the gas burners on the cooktop. The spark module sends electrical signals to the igniters, creating the spark that lights the gas for cooking.

Over time, the spark module can fail due to electrical issues, exposure to moisture, or normal wear and tear. When the spark module becomes faulty, it can lead to various problems with igniting the burners.

Symptoms of a bad spark module include:

  • Burners not lighting or taking a long time to light
  • No clicking sound when turning the burner knob
  • Burners only lighting intermittently
  • Visible sparks or arcing from the module

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

NOTE: This part is only compatible with serial numbers starting with 21 and up on model 8351VV.

Retha, It does sound like you may have found the spark module at the lower left rear but there are only 6 wires going to it.

Biff, The spark module 12001596 on this type range is located on the lower right side base rail as viewed from the front. You will need to remove the burners, raise the top then remove the three screws from the rear of the panel and top edges of the side panel. This should loosen the side panel enough to pull it up and disengage the "key hole" at the front inside of the panel(top and bottom) from the screw and plastic spacer holding it in place. Don't forget, you'll need top remove power to the range, before you start anything, and check the igniter switch circuits WP74007096.

Hello Pary. If none of the switches are causing the top to spark, you will need to replace the module in the unit. It is not the igniters.

Dean, Based on your information, First check and make sure you have the proper power supply at the outlet, and the line cord didn't get knocked loose or anything like that. Then start at the spark module 8215557 and valve switches WP74007696. You'll need to remove the grates, burner caps and burner bases(two screws each) remove the drip pans then raise the glass panel up and off the burner box frame, Be careful with the glass, make sure you turn off the gas supply and remove power to the cooktop, before you start anything..

John, Fortunately, The igniter wire terminals (1/8 in) can be attached to any one of the matching 1/8 in terminals on the spark module. The 120 VAC wires need to be attached specifically. The White wire needs to be attached to the 1/4 in. terminal labeled "N" and the Tan or Black wire needs to be attached to the 1/4 in. terminal labeled "L". Also make sure there is a properly polarized and grounded outlet for the power cord to be plugged into.
