The Lid Switch Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This assembly includes two switches, a bracket, and a fuse. It is responsible for detecting whether the lid is securely shut, allowing the washer to proceed with the selected wash cycles.

Causes of a faulty or damaged lid switch assembly can include regular use, wear and tear, or electrical malfunctions. These factors can result in issues such as the washer not starting or stopping mid-cycle, safety concerns if the washer operates with the lid open, or error codes indicating lid switch failure.

Symptoms of a bad lid switch assembly may include:

  • The washer not starting or not responding when the lid is closed
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle or not completing the wash cycle
  • Error codes indicating a problem with the lid switch

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Patti, If the unit is not filling with water the first thing that you will want to check is to make sure that the inlet valves are not clogged. If the screens get clogged then the unit will not fill. Also check to make sure that the water valve is getting 120 vac when the unit is supposed to call for water. If no power getting to the water valve you will want to check wiring to make sure that there are no breaks and if that checks ok then the check timer.

Old Maytag clothes washer. Machine was running well. I lifted the lid to add clothing to the load and the agitator continued to churn even with the lid up. I closed the lid - the machine kept running. Lifted the lid again - machine stopped. Became dead with the lid up or down. No controls work. Makes no noise in response to any adjustment. When I lift and lower the lid I hear a clicking sound from the small white button as it is pushed in and out. Posts say 95% of the time a replacement lid switch is required. ??? Your advice sought. What part # should I buy. Thank you.

Hello Nick. Yes, you need to replace the lid switch assembly WP22001682 on the unit. Use a marker and draw around the old housing and remove it and install the new housing in the same location. These are easy to replace if done like that.

I turned the washing machine on at night and when I went to put clothes in the dryer the next day it was still sitting full of water but would not move into any cycles. I have tried every cycle, water level, and water temperature and it seems completely dead. After opening the control panel I checked the fuse which looks fine. I removed the switch and tested it. The first time it seemed dead but when I tried again to be sure I was holding the VOM prongs were in good contact it seemed fine. I read the next thing to do is to test the timer, but there are so many wires involved in the timer harness that I have no idea how you go about testing that.

1 Answer

Hello Nik, You need to put the VOM on ac voltage and verify voltage to the wall receptacle. This sounds more like the lid switch WP22001682 than the timer WP22001026. True, the timer is a constantly changing on/off switch, but if the unit is unresponsive, the issue is most likely the lid switch. If the unit never fills, you could have a bad water inlet valve WP22002360. There is also the possibility of a bad pressure switch WP208201.

Ksam, You will need to check a few circuits at the timer and water temp. switch, with a multimeter. At the timer, you'll need to unplug the power cord, select the rinse cycle and pull out the timer knob, You should read a "closed" circuit between SW (blk) and 5B (blu) ibn the rinse setting on all three cycles. At the water temperature switch with any "cold" rinse setting You should read a "closed" circuit between terminals 7T (wht) and 3 (ylw) and 7T (wht) and 4(orng). You also want to disconnect the air tube from the water level switch and make sure it is not clogged with debris, by blowing in it. Here's some meter usage information, should you need it [http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html]
