The Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool microwaves. It controls the turning on and off of power to the microwave during cooking cycles as well as detects positions within cycles to signal appropriate actuations of the microwave's magnetron, fans, and lights. The switch is a crucial electrical component that facilitates the fully automatic operation of preset cooking programs.

Causes of a bad switch can include wear and tear over time or unexpected surges that cause electrical component failure.

Symptoms of a bad switch include:

  • Cooking programs failing to advance properly or stopping mid-cycle unexpectedly
  • The microwave failing to turn on or experiencing power issues
  • Random noises, humming, or lights occurring when the microwave is supposed to be idle
  • Buttons or controls acting intermittently unresponsive

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello Chad, the control does not see the door closed correctly thru the status of the door interlock switches, to check this the microwave would need to be unplugged, uninstalled, the outer case removed, and the operation of the door/door switches checked, that would include how the door latch pawls align with the bracket that holds the switches, the interlock switches and the switch cams.

Chris P for Model Number KHHC2090SSS0

My microwave displays the following message "SAFETY FUNCTION ACTIVATED; Open and close door to resume use." the touchscreen is fully functional and all of the features respond to touch input, but whenever I press start the error message appears, so I cannot get any of the heating features to perform. Also, when I open the door, the interior light DOES NOT illuminate. Is this a door switch problem? If so, how do I access the switches inside the right hand panel? Do I have to dismount the microwave (it is mounted above my stove) to access. Thank you for your assistance.

Hello Chris, the control board did not see the door switches open/close correctly. To access/test the switches the microwave would need to be uninstalled, the outer cover removed and the switch tested with a multimeter, also check the switch cams and support brackets for warpage or out of position.

Larry, With the light not going off then you will want to test the door switches to make sure they are good and if they check ok then the control board would be the issue.

Pat, You would want to check the door switches and the thermal fuses in the unit for continuity as these would be the likely cause for this issue.

Hello Gordon, This is most likely a bad door switch W10211972. Since there are three which have the same current flowing through them at the same time, as per the manufacturer, when one fails, the others will fail soon enough that they should all three be replaced at the same time.
