The Microwave Door Interlock Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool microwaves. This safety device ensures that the microwave only operates when the door is securely closed. The interlock switch prevents the microwave from running with the door open, protecting users from exposure to microwave energy.

You should replace the door interlock switch if it becomes faulty or damaged. Causes of a bad switch can include wear and tear from frequent use, electrical malfunctions, or physical damage from slamming the microwave door.

Symptoms of a bad microwave door interlock switch include:

  • Microwave not starting or running intermittently
  • Microwave running with the door open
  • Error messages or safety warnings
  • The interior light not turning on or off properly

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

David, there is something wrong with either a door switch or strike that is telling the control that the door is not closed properly. The only way to find the problem is to remove the oven assembly and access the microwave section to see if there is a problem with a strike or switch. This is a very complex job, you will need help getting the oven out and in the disassembly.

Russ for Model Number WMH73521CS4

My door would not latch and therefore not turn on. I replaced the 3 micro switches as well as the 2 interlocks and cam plates. The door seems to close properly but when I plug it back in and hit start I receive an error message that says close door. Also when I open the door the light and blower fan come on. When I close the door the fan shuts off but the light stays on. Can you please tell me what is wrong and needs to be replaced? Did I mix up the wires on the switches when I reinstalled them?

1 Answer

Russ, You would want to check to see if the wiring is connected properly. If the switches are connected properly then it sounds likely that there is a faulty door switch on the unit.

Goody, Check the spring on the interlock but this issue sounds like the interlock may need to be replaced and possibly a door switch needing to be replaced if it is sticking.

Rscott for Model Number MMV4205DS1

Intermittent "Open/Close Door" error message, whenever the interior light does not come on when door is open, then you close door, put cook time in, hit start, "beep-beep - error message." Sometimes waiting with door open until light comes on (sometimes a few seconds, sometimes several minutes), then close door, set cook time, hit start, it works normally, until next time. This is getting to be an every day thing. Do I need to replace all 3 switches and the fuse? Is it more likely one of the 3 switches? If the fuse blows, it will never work until replaced, right? What are there 3 switches? I get top and bottom but what is the third one for?

1 Answer

Thanks for the question, this has been a common problem with this design, yuou will need to replace the 3 switches, W10269458, W10269460, W10727360 The switches are in a specific position and need to be replaced in the same way. One is a primary, another is secondary, the third is a monitor switch. Yes, you will need to replace the fuse in order for it to work.
