The Microwave Door Switch is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool microwaves. It is important for safety as it detects when the door is properly closed and latched before initiating cooking cycles. The switch prevents operation if the door is ajar.

Causes of a bad door switch can include wear and grime accumulation over many years of use, impact damage, or failures in the plastic actuator or electrical components.

Symptoms of a bad door switch include:

  • The microwave failing to start cooking even with the door closed and latched
  • Error messages related to the door position being displayed
  • Inability to lock or properly sense the closed door position

This genuine Whirlpool OEM replacement part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Microwave Door Switch (Part Number: OEM13289769)

1 Answer

Heath, this can be caused by one of the interlock cams closing up. With the power supply cord unplugged, it would be recommended that the upper and lower interlocks are checked to see if they are in the closed position. If one of them is locked, it can be moved to the open position from behind the control panel and it would be recommended that the door switches are tested for continuity to identify if any have failed. The top right and bottom-left switch should have continuity with the door open. The top left and bottom-right switches should not have continuity when the door is open. If a switch fails, it would be recommended that the corresponding interlock is changed if it is the upper use the part number W11182140 and for the lower use the part number W11182141.

Jason, If nothing works like the vent fan and cooktop light or inside light it is probably the cavity thermostat has failed. I would suggest checking the door switches also and last would be the control board replacement. Door switches and thermostat can be a continuity test.

Craig, You will want to test all the door switches to make sure that they are good. If they do not test good then they would need to be replaced. If this checks ok then test the thermostats on the unit to make sure that they are good.

I purchased all 3 replacement switches and plastic mounting brackets as I heard they tend to break when replacing the switches…is it going to be apparent which switch goes where? Issue with this microwave is the interior light doesn't always come on, opened the door while the microwave was running and it didn't stop, door is closed yet the microwave still thinks the door is open…all intermittently. Called a repair service to fix and they didn't know how to fix it (!). I am not an electrician, however, the reviews on this site led me to believe this one is pretty straightforward….is it? Thank you, Rebekah

1 Answer

Rebekah, two of the switches you purchased are what is called -normally open and one is normally closed, they are very specific in their position in the switch housing and the wires that are attached to them. If you look at each switch, it will say NO or NC, when you take the old switch off the bracket, take pictures of the wire position and what switch is NO or NC and to where it fits in the bracket.

Daniel, You will want to check the door switches on the unit for continuity. The door switch will most likely be the issue but will want to test to see which one is faulty.

My Microwave is acting funny, many times, all panel lights and button will work , but the inside light of microwave wont turn on and till the light doesnt turn on , i cant heat anything, when I press the start button it says open and close the door but it doesnt still turn on may times. It acts likes this from few mins to hours , and then all of a sudden the inside light would turn on and everything will wok fine. Could this be the Switch issue or hat ? Please suggest. Thanks Vishal Varma
