This temperature-control thermistor (temperature sensor) feeds accurate temperature data to the control so your appliance can cycle components correctly and, where applicable, manage defrost. Replacing a faulty sensor restores stable operation and consistent performance. What it does:

  • Senses temperature and varies resistance to report conditions to the control
  • Helps the control regulate system cycling for proper operation
  • Supports defrost logic where applicable to prevent coil icing
  • Common failure signs: erratic temperature control, short/long cycling, icing on the evaporator, or unexpected shutoffs
What's included:
  • 1 thermistor
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Note the original sensor location and wire routing; install the new sensor in the same position
  • Transfer any mounting clip or sleeve from the old sensor if needed
  • Fully seat connectors and route wiring away from sharp, hot, or moving parts

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermistor (Temperature Control) (Part Number: OEM18022842)

Sean, If you can restart the dryer immediately, it would likely be a failed relay on the control board W10756689 and the board would need to be replaced. If you have to wait to restart the dryer, the motor WP2200376 is likely faulty.

Ann, the main control W10756689 can be tested for voltage output to the motor by testing the grey wire at relay PS9 for 120VAC when a cycle is started. If there is not 120VAC, the main control has failed. If there is 120VAC, the dryer will need to be unplugged, then the thermal fuse WP40113801 will need to be tested for continuity, and if it doesn't have continuity, would need to be replaced. If there is continuity, the wires will need to be inspected for any breaks or loose wires, and if there are none, then the motor WP2200376 would be the issue.

Andr, based on the information provided, the thermistor WP31001590 is reading outside of tolerance as it should read between 9k to 11k O at room temperature. Another thing that can be checked is ensuring that the vent hose, as well as the ventilation going from the wall to the outside of the house is checked and cleared of lint build up.

Don, This thermistor should have a resistance of 10K ohms of resistance at 77 degrees and will have a plus or minus 10 percent. It sounds like the thermistor may be the issue as it sounds like a low rating.

Bradley, If you were getting 9.49K ohms of resistance then this would be a good part.

Hello Mike. The sensor bar wires goes directly to the control board. The thermistor should run with that reading. It sounds like the loose wires may have shorted that board out.

Hello Mike. Thermistors read resistance, not continuity. Try resetting the dryer by unplugging it for about 20 minutes then plug it back in. If this does not work, then you may have shorted out the board on the unit.

Rod for Model Number MCE8000AYN

I'm confused with the part numbers listed. the second photo of this part clearly shows the identical part number I'm looking for; #53-4281 -- its printed on the part! No where can I find this part number cross referenced. On a second similar sensor that reads a multimeter resistance of 1.0, hence its dead, I have the part number #53-4513, I'd like to replace that as well. Can you help me find it? I believe it may be for the steam Thermistor, The maytag model number of the dryer is a maytag: MCE8000AYN. Thanks.
