Anna, If you pull the unit out and remove the cover at the bottom, the defrost timer should be located on the right side and you would just remove 2 screws to take it out and disconnect the harness and plug into the new one.

I got a new Defrost Timer, 4391974, and it has the extra black wire. It looks like the connector plug (4 wires) on the refrigerator will line up with the 4 contacts on the new timer. Do I even need to use the black wire? If so, which contact should it go on? If I need to use the black wire, do I just push the contact blade of the timer through the slot in the black wire's contact?

Hello KIm, You will need to slip the end of the black jumper lead onto terminal 1 of the defrost timer. This will ensure a defrost cycle every 6 hours for optimum performance.
