Defrost timer that advances the refrigerator's defrost cycle at roughly six-hour intervals to help prevent excessive frost buildup and keep cooling consistent. Replaces a failed timer to restore regular defrost scheduling. What it does:

  • Advances the defrost cycle so the heater can melt frost from the evaporator on a timed schedule.
  • Helps prevent heavy ice buildup that can reduce airflow and cooling performance.
  • Common symptoms of a failing timer: excessive frost or ice accumulation, compressor running constantly, or inconsistent temperatures.
  • Works with mechanical defrost systems to alternate between cooling and defrost intervals.
What's included: One defrost timer. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the appliance before servicing to avoid electrical shock.
  • Handle connectors and wiring carefully; ensure all terminals are fully seated.
  • Mounting hardware and connector types can vary by model—retain original fasteners and note wiring positions before removal.

Fred for Model Number BNT23L8A BL93B

I am hooking up a Replacement Thermostat on my Magic Chef Refrigerator. The original timer has the following configuration: Terminal 3 Blue (Defrost Thermostat), Terminal 4 Orange (Freezer Fan), Terminal 1 White (Neutral (?), and Terminal 2 Yellow (Heater). Can I just plug in the existing wiring harness connector or do I need to rearrange the wiring to accommodate the new timer. I also have an extra wire coming from the timer. Where does that go.

1 Answer

Hello Fred, The black wire on the timer should connect to the number 1 terminal. This will allow a defrost cyccle to take place every 6 hours.

David S for Model Number Norge refridgerator model NNT156G

I just bought a defrost timer part # 4391974. The refridgerator has a four pronged plug: white wire from prong # 3 to neutral, orange wire from prong # 4 to the freezer fan, blue wire from prong # 1 to the temperature control, yellow wire from prong # 2 to the defrost heater. Can I just use the four prong plug without the jumper wires? If not, how do I hook them up and how do they attach to the time and/or plug? I don't really understand the instructions. Any help you may offer will be greatly appreciated.

1 Answer

Hello David, The wire harness that you have should hook up as a direct connection with the loose wire coming from timer motor goint to terminal 1.

Hello Marc, The black wire should be attached to terminal number 1 in order for it to go into defrost every 8 hours. This is the way I always have hooked up the timer. Even when the units' tech sheet calls for the accumulative wiring, it does not do the efficient job that the continuous wiring does. It prevents any accumulation of ice that isn't removed from the evaporator coils that will reduce unit efficiency.

Hello John, The instructions are in the attachment. As per them, the present wiring diagram will have to be referenced to wire this part correctly. It should be either on the back of the unit or on a sheet usually behind the kick panel. It looks like you will need the neutral wire, (usually white), to the number 3 terminal. The loose lead on the replacement timer will go on terminal 1. The lead from the temperature control (sometimes yellow) will now attach to the number 1 terminal. The wire that leads back to the compressor (sometimes blue) goes to terminal number 4 and the lead that goes to the defrost thermostat (sometimes brown) will go to the number 2 terminal. I couldn't find the wiring diagram for your unit so you need to find the wiring diagram if the wire colors are different.
