Defrost timer that advances the refrigerator's defrost cycle at roughly six-hour intervals to help prevent excessive frost buildup and keep cooling consistent. Replaces a failed timer to restore regular defrost scheduling. What it does:

  • Advances the defrost cycle so the heater can melt frost from the evaporator on a timed schedule.
  • Helps prevent heavy ice buildup that can reduce airflow and cooling performance.
  • Common symptoms of a failing timer: excessive frost or ice accumulation, compressor running constantly, or inconsistent temperatures.
  • Works with mechanical defrost systems to alternate between cooling and defrost intervals.
What's included: One defrost timer. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the appliance before servicing to avoid electrical shock.
  • Handle connectors and wiring carefully; ensure all terminals are fully seated.
  • Mounting hardware and connector types can vary by model—retain original fasteners and note wiring positions before removal.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer, Defrost (6 Hr.) (Part Number: OEM18028053)

1 Answer

Hello Don. You will place the black wire onto number 2 of the timer. If your unit is a 3 wire, you will use the jumper across 3 and 4 of the timer as well.

DG, If you have only 3 wires to connect to your timer then you would need to use the jumper between pins 3 and 4 and the loose terminal would go to terminal number 2. If it is a 4 wire connection then you will need to determine if the unit is a continuous run or a cumulative. If it is a continuous run then you would need to install the jumper wire on terminal 1 and if cumulative will be on terminal number 2.

Hello Fuller. You will attach the wire to number 2 on the timer. The only way you will use the jumper is if your harness only has 3 wires. Then the jumper will got across terminals 3 and 4 of the timer.

Hello Chuck, This unit should have the lead connected to terminal 1. This allows the defrost timer motor to run continuously and defrost on a regular time schedule.

I just got a replacement timer 4391974 for my Magic Chef (original TMDG823VB9) and just plugged it in. I saw the black lead on it but didn't do anything but left it there. I'm assumed the new timer is digital and it will do its defrosting automatically (i.e. if it realizes the fridge took a bit longer to run to cool than normal, it will go into defrost mode). Should I connect that wire to 1 (which I believe is a return/neutral) or 2 (which I believe is power in for defrosting), or just leave it as is and assume it will work fine.

1 Answer

Jeff, The black lead on the timer will go to either terminal 1 or 2 on the new timer. If you fail to put this lead on the correct terminal per the instructions then the unit will never go into the defrost. The timer is mechanical and the black lead is the other side of the timer motor which will not turn if the wire is not connected.

Hello Mark, You will put the black wire on terminal number 1. This is a continuious configuration as the unit calls for a defrost cycle every 6 hours.

I bought defrost timer 1/2hp 6 hour part no. 4391974. Should black lead wire be connected to terminal 1 or terminal 2? I have run it for a couple months connected to terminal 1, but it seems to defrost too long. Things in freezer melt, ice cubes start melting, then everything freezes back up. Ice cubes have huge chunk of ice on bottom of tray from so m any cubes melting. I'm going to try connecting black lead to terminal 2, but I'm just "shooting in the dark" on this.

1 Answer

Hello Robert. Based on the information you provided, you will want the unit to be set on continuous.
