The Timer is an OEM part for Whirlpool washers, designed to control the sequence of operations in your washing machine, from filling with water to spinning and draining. This mechanical device determines the duration of each cycle, ensuring your clothes are washed under optimal conditions for the selected settings.

Causes for timer malfunction often involve internal component wear, electrical failures, or corrosion due to moisture exposure. Over time, contacts within the timer can wear out or burn, leading to incomplete or erratic operation.

Symptoms of a bad Timer include:

  • The washer not starting or completing a cycle.
  • Stuck on one part of the cycle for too long.
  • Water not filling or draining correctly.
  • The machine skipping certain cycles or operations.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Hello Andrew. For the water, I would suggest either the hose or the switch. For the noise, it does sound like the timer. Maybe you have 2 issues going on with this unit.

Hello Andrew. There are 2 possibilities. It could be a bad water valve or pressure switch. Unplug the machine, if it continues to fill you will need to replace the valve part# WP3952162. If it stops when unplugged it will most likely be the pressure switch WPW10311356. Also check the hose on the pressure switch to make sure it is in good condition.

My 18 year old Whirlpool washer "stops" in the "normal" program before entering the rinse cycle. Pushing the timer knob in and advancing it manually for one click and then pulling it back out five times (five clicks in total) causes the washer to enter the rinse cycle on the fifth click and finally finishes the program. When using the "permanent press" program, the washer runs through each cycle without any hesitation. Have I reached the life expectancy of a Whirlpool timer (at 18 years :} ... or is there some other gremlin lurking around? Thanks in advance... John

Hello David. First you will need to remove the timer knob by unscrewing it from the timer shaft. Then disconnect the power to the unit, and remove the screws holding the control panel in place. Lift and filp the control panel over to access the timer. Unplug the wire harness going to the timer, and remove the screws holding the timer in place. Reinstall in reverse order. Hope this helps.
