First we googled the problem and watched several videos on what could be the problem. Then we called in a repair man - $125 to test and get his diagnosis but we watched him take it apart and test. He said "throw out - these are disposable machines". The dishwasher is only 3 years old!. After discussing issue with chat assistant, I ordered a new control panel. It arrived on the second day. Removed the old panel, cleaned around the area, and installed the new one. It works now just like new. The local place was going to charge me almost $400 but got away with spending only $250 and didn't have to wait for the repairman to arrive.
The cleaning was the most difficult part !

After watching a video on how to replace this part, I was surprised at the amount of disassembley involved to replace the cover. The unit has to be moved out from under the counter about 10 inches to disconnect the door springs before removing the door. Next the hinges and the inner and outer panels have to be separated and then finally you have access to replace the trim panel. Removed the original outer door retaining screws with torque bit. Unfortunately the new door was slightly thicker than the original. Therefore also removed (loosened) the control panel to fit the new door behind the control panel slots that the outer door was to slide tabs into. Fastened all screws back in place. Control panel screws very tight fit but forced into place. Looks great but difficult as new outer door not perfect fit in thickness.
