Bot both sets of roller bearings, lower ones on the appliance and the set on the trash can that rolls out. I just followed the instructions that were in the roller bearing package and only needed the tools that are recommended. Was a little tricky with the nuts, really need a person with "small" fingers to reassemble the nuts back on the lower set of bearing that are on the appliance. All in All, went well and works. The Power Nut Assembly is an OEM replacement part for GE trash compactors. It plays a vital role in properly securing the ram drive belt in place to transmit rotational power from the motor to the compacting ram.
Causes of a bad power nut can include cracks, stripped threading, or a loose nut that fails to adequately tighten the belt. Over time, nuts can also wear out from repeated tensioning of belts during use.
Symptoms of a bad power nut include:
- The ram failing to extend fully or retract smoothly
- Compaction being inefficient with items not compressing fully in the waste bin
- Premature wear of the belt from improper tensioning
This OEM GE part is also compatible with Whirlpool, Kenmore, and some KitchenAid models.

Received the part, and easily removed the two metal covers on the front of the trash compactor (total of eight small metal screws) to gain access to the backside of the roller assembly (locking nut). Used a socket wrench to unscrew the nut and removed the old assembly. The new assembly easily bolted into location, followed by reinstalling the metal covers. All in all, a quick and easy repair.
