The Defrost Control Board is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This board manages the defrost cycle by controlling the defrost heater and monitoring the freezer's temperature.
Causes of a bad defrost control board can include electrical issues, wear from continuous use, or damage from power surges.
Symptoms of a bad defrost control board include:
The refrigerator was given to me and hasn't defrosted since it was new. I found the defrost timer had a burnt spot on the circuit board. After installing a new timer, the refrigerator would trip the circuit breaker in my house when it entered defrost mode. I found that the pink wire running from the control board all the way to the thermostat was shorted somewhere between the two parts, inside the refrigerator. I ran a new "pink" wire and all is good. This burner box is the under-top housing for an electric cooktop or range. It supports the surface heating elements and mounting hardware, restoring proper element alignment, stability, and safe operation when the original housing is bent, corroded, or damaged.
I first DISCONNECTED POWER FROM THE RANGE using the breaker. I then pulled the range out from the wall to give myself plenty of working room. I lifted the range top up as when you clean under the burners. I then moved the ends of the bottom of the slide rods that lock the range top open back where they came loose from the top of the range. This allows you to fold it higher and have complete access to the top of the range. I then took out all the Phillips head screws that hold down the sheet... Read more
This refrigerator defrost timer automatically starts and ends the defrost cycle to melt frost from the evaporator coils. Replacing a failed timer restores consistent cooling performance and helps prevent frost buildup that can restrict airflow.
I had had the same problem 4 or 5 years ago and spent close to $200 to repair it. I did have the slip from that repair with part #'s so I went ahead and ordered a defrost timer and thermostat. You-tube had plenty of videos on replacing those parts and even before they arrived I was able to add a switch and bypass the broken thermostat and start a cycle manually with the timer. (which it seems was was still functional). Between that and cycling some ice packs up from the still working... Read more
This defrost timer controls the automatic defrost cycle in select refrigerators and freezers, switching between cooling and defrost to clear frost on the evaporator. It helps maintain stable temperatures and prevents heavy ice buildup and long run times. What it does:
I took the bottom tray out of the freezer and found the coils iced up severely. I was reasonably sure the defrost timer was the problem and your tech said that was a good possibility. Ordered and replaced timer. (15 minutes) Problem fixed!!! Saved purchasing a new fridge at big bucks. We live over 40 miles from a service center so the cost of having a tech come out is astronomical. Thanks!!! Read more

The defrost timer controls your refrigerator's automatic defrost cycle, periodically pausing cooling to power the defrost heater. Replacing a faulty timer restores proper defrosting to help prevent frost buildup, temperature swings, and excessive run time.
At first, I suspected the evaporator fan motor was going bad, but when I went in to check it out, I found the evaporator coils totally frozen up; the fan was cavitating. I defrosted the coils completely and checked everything out. By process of elimination the Defrost timer had to be the culprit. I unplugged the timer and sure enough, the motor winding was open. Replacing the defrost timer fixed my problem. Troubleshooting (using the information available on your web site) took a little... Read more
