The Light Socket is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool microwaves. This socket holds and supplies power to the light bulb inside the microwave, illuminating the interior when the door is opened or when the microwave is in use. It ensures that users can easily monitor the cooking process and check the condition of the food.
Over time, the light socket can become worn out or damaged due to regular use, electrical surges, or the heat generated within the microwave. Corrosion or buildup on the contacts can also impair the socket’s ability to provide a stable connection to the light bulb, leading to intermittent or complete failure of the light.
Symptoms of a bad light socket include:
- The interior light not turning on when the door is opened or during operation
- Flickering or dimming of the light
- The light bulb frequently burning out
- Electrical arcing or sparking from the socket area
This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

The exterior light bulb failed the bulb had broken away from the socket and was hanging by the wires David R. • Buxton , ME • October 27, 2017
In order to get the bulb screw base out of the socket I had to remove the bottom metal panel and remove the the bulb base. Once I removed the socket, I noticed that the one of the electrical solderless connectors was corroded and burned. I replaced the connector, socket, and bulb. Works great now.
