The starter pawl bridge provides the resistance for the starter rope that is required to fire the engine. The bridge connects to the flywheel and is responsible for making it spin when the starter rope is pulled. Over time, the pawl can become worn with use. In the event that other starter components go bad, those can also damage the pawl. If the flywheel does not engage, it may be a faulty pawl. Always use gloves when replacing engine components and be certain to disconnect the spark plug before working on any engine parts.
