Robert L Williamsburg , VA November 15, 2014 Appliance: Model MAYTAG DE 409 It was taking unusually long to dry a typical load I removed the front panel and observed the heating element while running the dryer. It was cycling off every minute or so and staying off for several minutes. Even though it was likely the high temp cycling thermostat I replaced both the 14, and 15 cycling thermostats which I think are the original factory units. That makes them nearly 35 years old. Problem fixed. Read More... 11 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 15-30 minutes Tools: Screwdrivers, Socket Set

Thomas J Burlington , WA December 18, 2023 Appliance: Maytag Gas Dryer DG512 Age and overwork. My 1988 Maytag gas dryer has worked hard since we bought it new back in the day. While it still works, there has been a decline in drying efficiency. In the past I've replaced the blower wheel twice, and the igniter at least twice, as well as the lint screen and gas valve solenoids. This time, it just seemed to be having a hard time drying completely, with odd cycling of the gas valve and hesitation igniting. So in my efforts to avoid replacing this dryer, I replaced the gas valve, the flame sensor, all the thermostats, and both the front and rear felt drum seals. Everything was pretty straightforward, with the only wrinkle being that once the new felt seals are in, the drum is hard to turn until they get seated in. The drive belt was slipping quite a bit as I ran the empty drum for a few cycles to get things broken in, and the support wheels in the back only touched occasionally. After maybe 5 loads, everything seems to be happy and drying better than ever. Read More... Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 30-60 minutes Tools: Nut Drivers, Screwdrivers, Socket Set
