The auger on my ice maker was made of plastic and had broken pieces off it. The new one is made of metal and seems to work much better. Was a fairly simple repair. However pay close attention when disassembling, I recommend using your cell phone and snap a pic of the different stages as I became a little confused when putting it back together. Ordered the part and it was here the next day. I'm very happy to have my ice coming down the chute again. By the way, I'm a 70 year old woman and I replaced it, so don't be afraid of the job. My folks had been told the fridge/freezer unit was so old that it could not be fixed. I knew from past experience that was likely not the case because of AppliancePartsPros.com. The replacement was quick and straight forward after watching the video to see the point about the reverse threads on the end of the shaft and how to keep the crusher blades together. Jeffrey S The Colony , TX April 01, 2016 Appliance: Whirlpool Side By Side Refrigerator GD5SHGXLT00 Ice dispenser stopped working reliably The blades of the ice dispenser drum had both broken, so the spindle rotated freely inside the drum. Ice would basically have to fall through the hole by chance even though the auger was turning. Our ice maker model had a one-piece drum & auger, so I ordered both parts of the two-piece replacement set. They came with everything needed to complete the repair. Not much in the kits to explain the actual details of take-down & assembly, but if you are mechanically inclined the parts order has a certain logic to it. The repair took about 30 min.
