Kriston C Akron , OH December 09, 2023 Appliance: Maytag Washer MVWC465HW2 Not spinning up fully & zipping/grinding sound when initially disengaged Took replacing gearcase/transmission & the center hub inside the tub under the wash plate. The zipping sound I was hearing was the spline gears between the shaft of the gearcase & the hub. The hub is plastic. The shaft is steel. My iron-heavy water got past the seals & rusted out the shaft spline on the gearcase. When in the "spin" mode the hub would rotate on the shaft & the sensor on the motor actuator sensed the changes in the speed of the gearcase & would shut down the washer. The disassembling, removal & replacement weren't that hard but I am very mechanically inclined. Not-so-confident folks may be intimidated but not a lot of tools are needed with only 4 sockets, a ratchet, flat & cross tip screwdriver & 15-inch socket extension. Took about 1.5 hours as it was my 1st time ever doing it. Tearing 70% of the insides apart but not hard at all. I spent extra time removing & cleaning the tub & the lower water collection pan as well as cleaning the wash plate underside. I got the washer in 2019 & did this in 2023, just hate my water!!! All in all $380 parts/shipping & beats replacing $600 washer. Honestly sounds better now than when we first bought the washer. Read More...
