My dishwasher quit working and would not turn on or do anything. I checked the thermal fuse and it had blown. I replaced the thermal fuse and it worked for a few days then quit working again. I pulled the Cntrl-Elec board out (Part Number: AP4564002) and looked at the back of the circuit board. The K2 relay had several hot spots. They all look to be on the side where the power comes from (P6, P8, and P9). Before I pay 130 dollars for a replacement board and 20 for another thermal fuse I wanted to know if this could be caused by something else or did the relay just fail? Could I just replace the relay? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer

Hello Robert, This issue is not normally caused by a bad control board. The hot spots on the control board were caused by the same current draw that caused the thermal fuse to blow. Of course the first suspect is the wire nuts where the power connects to the unit. When this isn't the cause, the motor windings are normally the cause. That is as long as the power supply wire isn't too small a gauge and the breaker isn't in need of replacement. In some of the units that had the black sound insulation in the door liner, the wiring harness was sticking to the material and causing the wiring insulation to conduct current and initiated the same issue. The fix for this was the replacement of the door liner and the complete wiring harness. This will not be the issue if the wiring harness is not sticking to the black sound dampening material. Replacing or "repairing" the control board will not solve the issue.
