How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP4567124 / WH12X10462 Capacitor

My son fixed it 

After removing the front panel I noticed that the cap on one end of the capacitor had popped off. For whatever reason it burst. I ordered a new capacitor, installed it and the washing machine works like new. This $30 part saved me from buying a new one. Appliance Parts Pro guaranteed their product so I was less hesitant to try the repair myself. 

The washer motor would not spin or agitate. Checked cover, switch, etc.Checked the internet and it said what I cheeked was all I could do & to call GE tech services.GE tech said to call authorized repair person. He came & I showed him that capacitor was shot. I ran the washer with a spare capacitor but had to disconnect capacitor when motor was up to speed...worked great that way. Serviceman contacted high-up GE tech & they said I needed a new motor $350, capacitor $40, & labor..total over $500. I found your website and asked the question "is the capacitor a start capacitor or run capacitor". You answered and we ordered a capacitor from you and now the machine works great. Replace a motor run capacitor 

In both cases, motor was getting power which was indicated by humming and it was also fairly warm to the touch. With power off, checked to make sure motor spun freely and belt was okay. Both were fine. Replaced capacitor and "bada bing bada boom", it worked. Completely hidden from view was the fact that the capacitor blew out it inards. After I removed it, it became immediately apparent that the capacitor was bad. Prior to that, I was just hoping that it was the problem. 

After consulting Google, I removed the front cover and inspected the belt. All seemed fine. then, I removed the agitator to inspect the coupling. all was fine. Then, I inspected the capacitor. The top of the casing was deformed, leading me to believe that it should have been replaced. the GE washer is 11 years old. The part was cheap, the shipping was quick. ( I paid a few bucks extra to get the part quickly, in case my prognosis was wrong ). the part was installed in a couple of minutes, 2 new zip ties, and started it up. the sound of the agitator kicking in was music to my ears. Let's hope it lasts another 11 years.
