How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP6031056 / WE04X24550 Dryer Timer

To replace the dryer switch I pulled off the dryer timer knob on the front control panel by just pulling on it and then went around to the back of the dryer's control panel and removed the five sheet metal screws holding the maintenance access panel in place. With the screws removed, the panel is removed by lifting upwards about a half inch to have the panel slide out of two little slots on the left and right side. There is a ground wire connected to the metal plate, I left that alone and just let the panel hang from it. I then took a picture of the current switch and all wire connectors. I also noted there was only one small star hex screw holding the timer switch in place along with two plastic slots, one on either side of the switch that mental tabs on the switch slid into, and finally a metal tab lock, just a small bent little metal tab that when bent up bumps against the switch and keeps it from being turned to be removed. To remove the switch, I took the smallest star hex key I had, dropped it in a 6 inch universal holder, basically this is a screwdriver with the end having a star hex key. The length is just about right to remove the screw with no issue. After the screw was out I took a flat blade screwdriver and applied a little bit of force to the metal tab stop to bend it down just enough that it was no longer at the height of the dryer switch. This allows you to now carefully grasp the switch and gently turn it and gently wiggle it to get the switch to come out from under the plastic tabs. Once the switch is no longer secured under the tabs I took a couple more pictures of the switch and wiring from different angles for reference only if needed. With the new switch in hand using a needle nose plyers I would remove one wire space connector at a time from the old switch and then attached the wire I removed to the new switch until all wires and connectors were moved over. Note since the original switch was no longer manufactured the replacement had an extra connector, this can just be ignored. I then worked at getting the new switch to slide into the plastic tabs. My best effort was to get the left side as I faced it in place first and the the right side with the screw and metal tab second. A bit of trial an error just don’t break wires. When aligned I put the star hex screw back in place and bent the metal tab stop up with a flat blade screwdriver. The panel and knob go on as easy as they came off. 

Ordered a new timer and knob. The husband was able to fix in about 20 minutes and now works like new. 

This was by far the EASIEST repair I have ever done. All I had to do was remove the broken knob, the back panel and disconnect the old timer. I then connected the new, put it in place, and replaced the knob. After a test run, I put the panel back on and have been doing laundry since! 

I got the parts in two days. Replaced the timer and knob in very quick fashion. This is an easy job. I suggest you take a picture of your timer in place before you disconnect it. Then remove one wire at a time from the old timer and attach it to the new timer in the same place.

I ordered a new timer and knob. I put it in and it runs very well. 

No code came up. I fixed the timer on my GE dryer and it was a breeze. No problem ordering the part from appliance parts pros your site was very easy to use. I don’t know how or why the timer broke it literally just stopped working after a load of laundry.

This is the beauty of buying an "old school" washer and dryer; the various functions are separate controls that can all be replaced individually. In this case, the fix was a new knob and a new timer module. A quick watch of a YouTube video and I was all set with how to remove the control panel and what to expect. Altogether ...parts, shipping and tax ...to repair the dryer ran me $133 and about 45 minutes of time.
